Carroll to Host Boston Celtics Head Coach Brad Stevens

Posted: Updated:

Brad Stevens, head coach of the Boston Celtics, is coming to Carroll College. He will be the guest speaker at a banquet and coaches clinic scheduled for July 10-11 on the campus of Carroll College.

Coach Stevens just completed his second season as the head coach of one of the NBA's most storied franchises. He led the Celtics to an unlikely 40-42 record in the 2014-15 season before falling to the Cavaliers in the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Mr. Stevens was a finalist for the NBA Coach of the Year and is considered one of the brightest young coaches in the league.

Before his time in Boston he was the head coach at Butler University in Indianapolis and led the Bulldogs on two Cinderella runs to the NCAA Championship game.

The Indiana native is also a long-time friend of head Carroll College men's basketball coach Carson Cunningham.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to announce that Brad Stevens will be coming to Carroll College to give a speech at a men's basketball dinner and presenting at a Carroll College coaching clinic," Cunningham said. "The fact that the current coach of the Boston Celtics is willing to do this for a childhood hooping buddy speaks volumes."

On July 10, Stevens will be the guest speaker for the banquet, sponsored by First Interstate Bank and held at the STAC on Carroll's campus. The social hour begins at 6:15pm, with dinner to follow.

The following day Stevens will headline a coaches' clinic held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the PE Center. The clinic will also include presentations Guy Almquist, the 2014 MHSA coach of the Year and all-time Carroll 3-point record holder, Bill Pilgeram the 2015 MHSA Coach of the Year and Carroll's all-time leading scorer, and Billings product Shann Ray Ferch, an award-winning author, nationally acclaimed Leadership and Forgiveness Studies scholar at Gonzaga University, and storied hooper.

Cunningham believes the weekend will be a great opportunity to learn from a great roster of presenters, highlighted by an NBA coach that has distinguished himself among his peers. "In addition to possessing a razor-sharp mind, Brad is a very gracious and thoughtful person. He was that way as a kid when we played AAU ball together, and he remains that way to this day," Cunningham said. "He has one of the highest winning percentages in the history of college basketball and was a finalist for this year's NBA Coach of the Year Award. Even better, he's chock-full of substance and integrity. I've already learned a ton from him, and I'm looking forward to learning more this July. I'm hoping we can show him a good evening in Helena on Carroll's campus -- it's a beautiful place, so I'm guessing we will."

Tickets to the banquet are $50 a person and $90 per couple. The cost of the clinic is $40 per person or $125 per coaching staff. Prices to attend both are $80 per person.
