GFCC Softball Heading to State Tournament as First-Year Program

Posted: Updated:

The old saying is that Rome wasn't built in a day. But there's a small Catholic school in Great Falls that has put that saying to the test.

"You know it's been a great season of learning and building the team up and earlier in the year we thought we had a good chance to get there and here we are."

Where they are is in the state tournament. And for a first year program they may not have experience but they sure do have plenty of talent and confidence.

"We are first yea going into the state tournament and that's incredible. We don't have the experience but we can compete with anybody so having that behind us is a lot of motivation for us."

Which they'll ride into their first round game on Thursday against Ronan. But Central isn't concerned about their opponent, they're focused on themselves.

"Right now we're working on some of our weaknesses and improving there. We need to be able to field the ball. We haven't had a problem hitting the ball against most teams. Fielding the ball and consistent pitching will be the key for us."

Good pitching, defense and offense all win you games. But often times in state tournaments it takes more than on-the-field play to win. And the Mustangs have that going in their favor.

"Everyone on this team gets together really well and just keeping each other up no matter if we lose first game, second game or whatever, just keeping the energy up and just keep each other going."

"It's amazing this teams's resilience. Down by 9 runs, they come back and score 10. So the girls know they can do it."

They might not have thought that to start the year. Not many people did. But now, the Mustangs are the dark horse pick to win it all.
