New Fergus Basketball Coach Looking to Spark Golden Eagles

Posted: Updated:

With Scott Spark's resume, it was a no-brainer for Fergus to hire him as their new head basketball coach. Just look at his success in three different sports in the past year.

Baseball: He took the Lewistown Redbirds to the Class A State Tournament.

Football: He lead Denton-Stanford-Geyser to an undefeated regular season and an appearance in the State Playoffs Semifinals (not to mention a title game appearance in 2013)

Basketball: The Bearcats upset top-seeded Great Falls Central Catholic in the first round of the Northern C Divisional.

Sparks is hoping to mimic this success for Lewistown.

"We just want to come in and put a good product out on the court as far as being good citizens and being aggressive on defense," says new Fergus Basketball head coach Scott Sparks. "Putting out a great overall product for our town. Lewistown is a great place to be and we think the potential is there to get this team back to being a team that competes at state every year and that's what our goal is."

The move allows Sparks to be closer to his family and to help out with their local business. Best of all, it eliminates the commute.

"I was getting to the point some days you're putting on 140 miles round-trip just for a practice," says Sparks. "The timing was just right for me to get back and a little bit closer to home."

But before Sparks steps onto the hardwood at Fergus he has one more mission to complete on the gridiron. The Bearcats were a game short of making the State finals in 2014 and his players are excited he'll be around for one more shot.

"We're going to play our butts off for him," says Bearcats junior Tyler Lee. "We're just in it to win it. We just want to go out there and compete and win and do the best we can. But yeah we want to get him out with a win."

2015 will be Sparks' final season with the Bearcats. The Fergus players are already looking forward to calling him coach.

"I love it," says Fergus Freshman Andrew Lalum. "I love how he coaches Baseball and I just happen to be a big fan of him. I think it's a good move that we're going to get him."

Fergus believes that Sparks will have the Golden touch with Eagles basketball. And if there's any doubt that remains, just remember that Sparks has a resume that speaks for itself.
