Jerry Schmitz Bringing Legacy to Lady Bison

Posted: Updated:

Jerry Schmitz is somewhat of a legend in these parts. And his legacy now has a new chapter… head coach of the Lady Bison at Great Falls High.

"I'm excited and I'm working on getting our staff together and we have summer kind of looking forward to when June gets here and when we can work our team a little bit and then chomping at the bit until November when we can get going," said Jerry Schmitz.

Now 53… the former standout in college at Great Falls, knows his new team quite well after being an assistant on Gregg Dart's staff this past season.

"This is a great group of kids and I had a chance to work with a lot of them this year and thought they they're a really great group. When you have those kind of kids it just makes coaching easy and fun," said Schmitz.

This year should also be fun for Bison fans. Schmitz plans on implementing a fast paced offense with a high intensity style of defense.

"We'll definitely try and push the tempo. We like to keep the offense off balance a little bit - the opposing team's offense off balance by changing defenses and mixing it up there and getting as many easy baskets as we can," said Schmitz.

All 5 of Schmitz kids are Bison… and off the court… he's looking to turn his team into a family.

"When one person does well everybody does well and when one person fails, the whole family fails and so we're going to work to be a family and be a cohesive unit from the seniors all the way down to the freshman," said Schmitz.

Schmitz is a proven basketball great in Great Falls… who would certainly enhance his legacy… by leading the Lady Bison back to the top of the Double A .
