Helena's Chase Smith to be Featured in Sports Illustrated

Posted: Updated:

"My phone rang and it said 'TIME Inc.' So I thought 'Who is this?' So I was like 'It's TIME, I'd better answer it.' So I answered it and it's like 'Hi, this is so-and-so from Sports Illustrated.' And I just go 'Woah, Sports Illustrated just called me.'"

That was how Chase Smith found out he had been selected for Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" section that highlights performances from some of the top high school and college athletes.

"It feels right almost," said Smith. "Because I've put so much work into pole vaulting. Everyone always tells me you'll see the work come out of it, and I'm just now seeing it come out."

Smith will continue to vault this summer as he prepares to head to the University of Washington to continue his pole vault career. And if he thought expectations were high when he set the state record, what about now?

"You get this recognition you think that people are going to assume you do these great things," said Smith. Now you've got to catch up. So now I'm going to work twice as hard to try and catch up higher. Kind of go past their expectations."

Chase is actually hoping he'll be able to top his own state record of 16 feet 4 inches this summer before he heads off to Washington, but he'll be sure to take a copy of his Sports Illustrated with him, which comes out next Monday, June 8th.
