MSU's Ferriter Excited for Chance at National Title

BOZEMAN - When Sean Ferriter competes in a Bobcat uniform next weekend it will be for the final time.

The good part is Ferriter will be competing for a national title.

"I was pumped,” Ferriter said. “That was one of my biggest goals all year. To be able to do that in my senior year, it was a good feeling."

The road to the NCAA Championships wasn't an easy one for Ferriter.

Last weekend at regional's in Austin, Texas, the hammer thrower started off slow.

It was on his final toss of the day, that he punched his ticket to nationals.

"As far as college throwing goes, that was probably one of the greatest days I've had,” he said. “Being able to accomplish something I've really wanted for at least a couple of years when I knew it was kind of in reach. Struggling for my first few throws and then getting it on my last throw was a great feeling."

Between now and next weekend's meet, Ferriter says slowing workouts down, hoping to be in top shape.

"I'm just going to keep on working on what I've been working on, technique work and maybe just taking it a little easier just to be at full strength for your final meet,” said Ferriter. “That's about it."

Competing for a national title isn't something every college athlete has a chance to do.

While most would feel the pressure, Ferriter is going into it with a relaxed mindset.

"You're going up against the best guys,” Ferriter said. “I'm not really going to compete against them. I'm still going against myself. I'm just going to relax and really have fun this meet. There is no meet after it so this is kind of the one time you get to relax, have fun, let loose a little bit, and just have fun."

While Ferriter of course wants the title, he says he has one main goal at nationals.

"I'd hope to get the school record this meet. It's like the one last time I get to attempt that. I'm about a foot and a half off. So that's my main goal and expectation."
