Deer Lodge Community Reacts to Quadruple Murder-Suicide

Posted: Updated:

As news spreads of the quadruple murder-suicide that happened off the grid in a remote cabin Sunday morning past the Orofino Campground, several people in the town of Deer Lodge said the deceased family was fairly well known and many hearts are broken as a result of this tragedy.

Friends said the family of five lived in the log cabin for about three years which was built by the father for his family. They said although the family lived up on the mountain top away from the hustle and bustle of the city, they did not live a secluded life per se.

Folks in the Deer Lodge community said the father was a handy man around town and always had his family in tow wherever he went, even on his job sites. The community is now trying to come to terms with this loss.

Theresa Yockim, a close friend of the family said, "You just want them to be here. You just want that beauty to continue because they contributed so much to our community and everyone knew them. You know all the stores, the Safeway, the Town Pump, all the places they did business. They were very friendly and outgoing."

"He was down here last week with the family and they were working together and you know it looked to me like a perfect family, you know like they got along real well so I don't know what set him off or what happened," said Tim Denty who was an acquaintance of the family.

Both Yockim and Denty expressed there weren't any warning signs or indications of a family in turmoil.

Police said this tragic loss marks the first four homicides of the year for Anaconda-Deer Lodge. Names have not yet been released pending family notification. Friends said the family was not from Montana and no relatives live in the state.
