Helena Runner Training to Represent Team USA in Beijing

Posted: Updated:

Heather Lieberg is a busy woman. She's a teacher at Jefferson Elementary, a mother, and she runs marathons! And it makes you have wonder how does she do it all?

"You know I have no idea," she laughs. "Someday I'll step back and wonder how I did it, but working full time, having three kids, and right now my training is pretty intense. It's anywhere from 90 to 110 miles each week."

That's quite a bit, and the pay off isn't this Saturday at the Governor's cup. It's in August in Beijing, where as part of team USA Heather will run in the World Championships!

"The USCF, they emailed me, and asked if I would be willing to take one of the spots," said Heather. "And I think it took me less than a second to respond 'Yes, yes, yes!' And they kind of jokingly replied 'Well take some time to think about it.'"

But Heather's mind was made up, she was going to Beijing. She even took on a new coach to reach her full potential come August.

"She's just a really hard worker," said running coach David Morris. "She doesn't have the experience most elite athletes her age would have, so we're just trying to train to her strengths."

"Each week I have about two or three workouts," said Heather. "They go from anywhere from 400's to K's to 5Ks to 10K's, so this actually fits perfect in for my training."

She's only four weeks into her 16 week training program, and will run the 10K at the Governors Cup where she'll run at a faster pace, which she'll need to do in Beijing.

"Right now I'm at a 2:34, and I'm hoping by the trials to be sub 2:30," she said. "So that's my goal. I think I can do it. Someone's got to have a good day, so I'm just hoping it's me."

"It's probably going to be a smaller field, it's a fast course," said Morris. "If you have a good day I think you can be top 20 or 30 there I think."

Heather is looking forward to her home town run on Saturday, but her ultimate test will come on August 30th. And when she returns from Beijing, it will be as a teacher, a mother, and hopefully as one of the top 30 marathoners in the world.
