Carroll Track & Field Announces Addition of 31 New Athletes

Posted: Updated:

Carroll College track and field recently completed a successful season which included 11 Saints earning All-American status led by Stephen Delaney who finished second in the 400 meter hurdles and Leah Esposito who finished third in the 1,500 meters and was a member of the third-place 4x800 meter relay team.

Carroll was competitive against the top competition in the state of Montana including NCAA Division I Montana and Montana State. The Saints look to build on this season's success with a recruiting class that includes 30 prep athletes and one transfer, head track and field coach Harry Clark announced Thursday. "This recruiting class is going to have a big impact on our program right away," Clark said. "There is a lot of talent in this group, a few have put up marks that would qualify for the NAIA Nationals and there are a couple that will compete for spots on our relay teams.

Overall, this class will really help our depth." The class includes 20 athletes from Montana, eight state champions and 18 All-State performers. "Our goal is to get the best athletes out of the state of Montana," Clark said. "There are always going to be a couple that are outside of our reach but we have a lot of great athletes in this group."

Earlier this year, the Saints announced the signing of five athletes that finished off their careers in impressive fashion. Hannah Porch from Big Sky High School in Missoula won the State AA triple jump and took second in both the 200 meter dash and the long jump to close out her spectacular high school career that included 13 all-state performances.

Tylynn Rettig from North Star High School earned all-state honors in three different events at the Class C State high school championship. Her performance closes out a career with nine all-state performances. Rettig took second in the 100 meter dash to future teammate Keely Ehmann from Darby High School who also won the 200 meter dash and the 400 meter dash. Ehmann ends her high school career with 10 All-State Honors. Annika Moore from Hamilton High School won the long jump at the Class A championship and took second in the triple jump. She closes out her career with six all-state performances. Ann Moloney from Gonzaga Prep in Spokane, Wash., finished her career with a top 40 finish in the Cross Country 5k. "We knew we had a good group of early signees but it was great to see them close out their season strong," Clark said.

In addition to the five early signees, the coaching staff added 26 more athletes that will help the Saints continue the uphill climb to national contention. Samantha Mundel from Columbia Falls is a four-time state champion in class A for distance races. She won the 1,600 meter and the 3,200 meter state championships this spring. Patrick Mirrane from University High School in Spokane earned all-state honors in the 800 meter and finished in the top 20 for the 5k at the Washington State Cross Country championship. "Samantha and Patrick are going to come in and compete for All-American honors right away," head cross country coach David Morris said. "Samantha is well rounded and a hard worker. She is one of the best runners in the state and we are looking forward to what she will bring. Patrick has a wide range, he can run everything from the 800 meters to the 8k. He will have no problem making the transition to college."

The Saints also bring in a pair of all-state pole vaulters. Keaton Brady from Great Falls High is a two-time all-state performer in with a personal record of 15-2. Mikayla Bloyder from Billings West had a stellar senior season and finished third in the pole vault with a jump of 11-6. Daniel Pendegrast from Stevensville is a three-time all-state hurdler and one-time state champion. He finished second in the 300 meter hurdles at the Class A state championship. He won the state title in 2014. Flathead's Monica White will look to contribute in the sprints where she earned three all-state honors. She was placed in both the 100 meters and the 200 meters at this year's Class AA state championship. "This class is the culmination of a lot of work by our coaching staff," Clark said. "There was a lot of effort by coach (Jimmy) Stanton, coach Morris, coach (Ryan) Utsey, and volunteer assistant Bill Ballinger. They put in a lot of effort and it will pay dividends immediately for Carroll track."
