Brewers Loaded with High Picks Heading into Season

Posted: Updated:
HELENA -

The Helena Brewers enter their 2015 season with high expectations because of the high draft picks that will be on the roster, including last year's first round short stop Jake Gatewood.

"They want me to work on some things at the plate," said Gatewood. "Defensively they want me to work on some specific things, but overall they just want me to compete every day."

"We do have some higher picks here, yeah," said Brewers Manager Tony Diggs. "Is the expectation probably a little bit higher? Yeah I have no problems with that. But at the same time we expect every guy out here to get better."

As of now that includes at least five players who were selected in last weeks MLB Draft who are hoping their first summer of pro ball will be as memorable as the moment they heard their name called.

"My parents all jumped up, my dad started crying, so that was good," said Brewers 2015 fifth round short stop Blake Allemand. "I was excited. I'm just blessed to be a part of the Brewers organization. I'm thankful they gave me a chance."

"I ended up getting a call from my advisor saying that 'Hey the Brewers are going to pick you up in the eight, what do you think?'" said Brewers 2015 eighth round pitcher Nate Griep. "I said I'm all for it, lets go. I actually went out back and freaked out like it was a great moment, and then a couple days later I'm up here in Helena, Montana."

On paper the talent assembled should better the record than the 27-41 mark last year. However, strong play usually means players move up, which is the ultimate goal.

"I walked around the back side of the building today, and I was able to see the big posters of all the guys that have come through here," said Diggs. "There have been some very good professional players come through here. So now it's up to us to teach the player, and enhance what they already have as a skill set."

This years Brewers team should have plenty of skill, now it's time to prove on the field.
