USA Soccer Fans Have Home in Great Falls

Posted: Updated:

Whether the World Cup is in another continent or north of the border, the Celtic Cowboy.. in downtown great falls… is the place to be to cheer on the U.S. National team.

It started last summer when the Men's team was in Brazil....and now the Montana Chapter of the American Outlaws is hosting watch parties for the Women's team in Canada. They say It's the best way to create a soccer environment in Montana that even the casual fan can enjoy.

"it's nice to have a place to gather," says Great Falls High girls soccer coach Lindsay Smith. "we've always been spread out and just kind of doing our own thing. So this is a great environment to bring everyone to.

"it's just like any other sport," says A.O. President Ryan Buffington. 'When everybody gets together, everybody gets caught up and in it."

There is also a Great Falls connection that enhances interest… in U.S. Soccer Forward Abby Wambach. The 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year has been here each of the last three years which makes local soccer fans that much more excited to watch the U.S. National Team compete.

"the connection that we have with Abby and what she does for us as far as community wise is enourmous," says CMR Boys Soccer head coach Joel Marinaccio. "so to be here to support her as community is big time for us."

"she knows about the Celtic Cowboy being the only official soccer bar for the American Outlaws," says Smith. "She thinks it's so great that Great Falls is so proactive in this endeavor in Montana."

Abby took a piece of Montana with her on her way to the World Cup. In this picture, she's wearing a "four-oh-six" shirt before playing in a friendly last May.

"that was a gift to Abby from us," says Smith. "so it was pretty cool that she's wearing it."

Abby and team USA will have everybody cheering for them. But some of the loudest cheers in Montana….will be coming from one place.
