Sunburst's Tyler Tharp Serves Community as NTC Volunteer Firefighter

Posted: Updated:

Just like most kids his age, Tyler Tharp keeps busy. He goes to school, plays sports and likes to have fun. But unlike most, he serves his community as a volunteer firefighter.

"My dad had always been on the fire department growing up and I thought it would be fun to try it and they voted me in from there," said Tyler Tharp.

"By law you have to be 18 and right after his 18th birthday that next meeting his name was brought up," said Tim Tharp.

So for the last 8 months now Tyler has been the youngest firefighter at the North Toole County Volunteer Fire Department

"I've kind of always thought it would be fun to try it and now that I'm on it it's fun. It's nice to know that people always need some help and I can always be around to help them out if they need it," said Tyler Tharp.

Helping others is customary for the Tharp family – it’s who they are. Tyler's dad, Tim, former chief has been a fireman for 16 years and continues to serve as a volunteer. He's also the superintendent of Sunburst schools and is constantly involved in the community.

"That's just the way we grew up - helping out. I always have people say well somebody else can do that. Can't somebody else do that? Well, no there is nobody else. You have to look inside and take care of it yourself," said Tim Tharp.

Tyler has taken the same approach in his life. And his dad couldn't be more proud for the man his son has become.

"I just can't tell you how proud I am of all of his accomplishments and everything that he continues to do and that's about all I can say. I can't sum it up any more than I'm just so dang proud of all he's accomplished and what he'll continue to accomplish," said Tim Tharp.

Tyler does things any kid his age would do. But his summers are spent a little differently. They're serving his community as a firefighter. And that's something everybody can respect.
