Legalize Marijuana Initiative Returns to the 2015 General Election Ballot

Posted: Updated:

An initiative to legalize marijuana in Montana has returned to the 2015 General Election ballot once more. Voters in the 2015 General Election may be able to decide if Montana will allow consumption and possession of marijuana if the sponsor gathers enough signatures.

The constitutional initiative was proposed by Anthony Varriano and seeks to allow individuals 21 years of age or older to consume or possess limited amounts of marijuana. The initiative also states that the first 40-million dollars in revenue raised annually through sales tax will be credited to the public schools fund.

Since the measure is a constitutional initiative, the sponsor must collect over 24-thousand signatures, coming from at least five percent of 34 legislative house districts.

This initiative comes three weeks after a contrasting ballot initiative, which seeks to require that illegal drugs under federal law will be illegal under Montana law.
