Mustangs Football Looking to Reload, not Rebuild

Posted: Updated:

How do you replace a quarterback like Reid Nelson? You don't. But Mustangs head coach Mike Nelson likes his freshman quarterback Noah Ambuehl's potential, however, he's not asking him to do too much too soon.

"Right now, we just need him to manage the offense and understand why things work the way they do. He's a big kid. He's going to be counted on to run the ball quite a bit, so he's going to have to grow up in a hurry," Nelson says.

Of course, Ambuehl will have a lot of help in the running game. Nelson says his three horses in the backfield average close to 200 pounds and his offensive line is experienced anchored by two seniors.

"Joe Bertha and Joe McGuire definitely have to be foundation guys for us. They are center and guard, good football players, senior leaders. They are working machines," Nelson proclaims.

"We lost some great guys with Reid and Nolan (Donisthorpe), but they definitely left us with something to move the program along so we're looking to build on that and keep getting better," Senior Joe Bertha adds.

On Defense, Nelson says he has guys who played last season, however the make-up will be different. A lot of underclassmen will have to play big roles on both side of the ball, but the Mustangs won't say they are in rebuilding mode.

"Your seniors certainly don't want to hear the words rebuilding and that sort of thing. You know our conference is tough. Realistically, can we make the playoffs? I think we can. Probably going to have to steal a win here or there, but I think we have the guys to do it," Nelson says.

"We're looking to get a drive to the playoffs. That's the hope. But the expectation is we give 100 percent and we play well together as a team," Bertha says.

That's a goal every team should strive for, no matter who they are trying to replace.
