Helena, Capital Volleyball Pushing for Deep Runs at State

Posted: Updated:

The Capital Bruins volleyball team finished last season with a 16-11 mark and finished fourth at state. But this year the Bruins are a year older and therefore feel they should be even better. Capital enters the 2015 season with seven seniors who have plenty of state experience. And it's that experience and familiarity with one another that this year's team will rely on as they look to make a run at a state title.

"I think we're really going to step up and be leaders," said Bruins senior middle blocker Savannah Perschon. "We'll try and teach the younger girls how to step up, and show them how to play their best."

"We just are really comfortable playing with each other," said Bruins senior libero Maddie Quick. "And by now we trust each other, and know what each others tendencies are. We know who hits where, how to play with each other, how to play defense. So it's pretty easy to go together."

On the other side of town the Helena Lady Bengals missed out on the state tournament last season for the first time since 2007. The Lady Bengals will be looking to make sure that doesn't happen again under new head coach Lyndsey Day. She coached the sophomores last year at Helena High, and this year will have 12 upperclassmen on the varsity team who expect to get to the state tournament.

"It's quite a bit of pressure," said Lady Bengals senior outside hitter Ally Peccia. "But I'd say it's mostly just from ourselves. All of us just really want to push ourselves to the next level. And you know we're going to battle, and we're going to fight, but win or lose everything is going to be alright."

"My sophomore year we took home third at state so I feel like we definitely have some unfinished business," said Lady Bengals senior setter Madison Richtmyer. "We don't have the best hitters, we don't have the best all state people, but if we work well together then we'll get there."
