Running Game, Defense Steal Show at Saints Scrimmage

HELENA -

Coming in to this fall the Saints knew they had to find a good replacement for running back Dustin Rinker, but if today's scrimmage was any indication, running the ball should be no problem for Carroll this season.

"I feel like we needed that," said Saints sophomore running back Ryan Walsh. "I feel like our defense is one of the best in the nation. So to run like that against them, it feels great. We had a little scrimmage last Wednesday, and we did a lot better this time."

"I thought the offensive line stayed in their blocks, we've got some competition at a couple spots," said Saints head coach Mike Van Diest. "We're not really sure who's going to play where, especially in the back ups. I think our starters are pretty well set."

While the Saints running game was impressive, it was the defense that stole the show. They only allowed two touchdowns, both coming to the first team offense.

"Pass-wise we did great, but as far as the run goes there were a couple long runs, Walsh had the real far run in the first series," said Saints senior linebacker Dawson Osborn. "I mean there was a lot of good things on defense, you can't complain about that, but there was also a lot of room to improve these next two weeks."

"We played pretty vanilla today," said Van Diest. "We didn't blitz at all today, we didn't put them into too many bad situations. We wanted to see guys play fundamental up front."

Mike Van Diest couldn't comment on too many players specifically. He said he's going to wait until Monday when he gets a good look at the film before he starts talking about guys. It's at that point where he'll decide who's going to be on the scout team, as we inch closer and closer to that opening game on September 5th hosting Southern Oregon.
