Saints Dowgin Readying Defense for Title Run

Posted: Updated:

Last season the Carroll Saints defense showcased two All Americans: Sean Blomquist and James Dowgin. Blomquist is now graduated, but Dowgin is still at Carroll, and turning heads yet again this training camp.

"James Dowgin, he's just unbelievable," said Saints head coach Mike Van Diest. "And we've had great defensive backs here. He's up there with the best of them, best I've ever seen. If I was at Wyoming, and Joe Tiller and I were coaching together, James Dowgin would have been recruited to Wyoming."

A two time All American, this will be Dowgin's fourth year starting for the purple and gold, and it's that experience that makes him so dangerous.

"The more games you play, the more plays you see," said Dowgin. "You're used to seeing different routes, you know what teams like to do in the conference. Just a lot of experience and knowledge back there."

"We like him in the middle of the field, because that's why he's accounted for ten or 11 interceptions in his career," said Van Diest. "But I promise you, he's not 215-220 pounds like those Seattle Seahawks safeties, but you'd better strap it on when he comes up."

The Saints will be relying on Dowgin to be the leader of the defense again this fall, but that's something he expected heading into his senior season.

"If I notice something that the offense is doing, since I've been there, I'll let the guys know," said Dowgin. "And I know where most people on the defense are supposed to be so I'll direct some traffic, and just try to lead this team."

"He's the best kind of leader we've seen, that I've been here since," said Saints senior linebacker Adam DeBruycker. "He's seen a lot more than I have, so any question I have I can go to him. He's like a second coach to me. He's like another coach on the field."

Carroll will not only need their senior leader to have another All American season, but also teach those around him if the Saints plan on having a defense capable of winning their seventh national championship in 2015.
