Saints Relying on Simac to Lead Young Receiving Corps

Posted: Updated:

Last season for the Saints Kyle Griffith accounted for the second most receptions, yards, and touchdowns with eight. This year the junior from Kalispell was expected to be the teams number one wide out, but with his injury that duty now goes to senior wide out Dylan Simac.

"It's been good," said Simac. "Me and Mac have been trying to help everyone out, learn the offense. Like I said all the younger guys are coming up with us so we've got to help them on and off the field."

Starting along side Simac will be a pair of freshman: red shirt, And former Helena High Bengal, Troy Arntson, and true freshman Connor Fohn. And for a team with national championship aspirations, it's a ton of pressure for the young receivers.

"Troy Arntson has been in our program for a year," said Saints head coach Mike Van Diest. "We knew what he could bring to the table. Connor Fohn, he's just a very gifted athlete. He's a lot like what Kyle was two years ago. You know when one door shuts another window opens up."

"They're just tremendous athletes," said Saints senior quarterback Mac Roche. "They put in a ton of work in the off-season, they watched a ton of film. And we're pretty deep at receiver, even with the loss of Griffy."

As the senior leader the knowledge Simac will pass down to his freshmen teammates will be invaluable to keeping the Saints aerial attack strong.

"I think he knows what is expected of him," said Van Diest. "I think that maturation process comes along with being a guy that when you play as a true freshman."

"Everyday we have meetings with Ty Emmert, our wide receivers coach, and he always quizzes us," said Simac. "Show us your knowledge is what it's called. And we have all the younger guys come up and see what they can do."

Injuries and younger players stepping up is just another part of football. We'll see how prepared they are in the teams first test of the season against Southern Oregon.
