CJI Hawks Football Team off to High Flying Start

Posted: Updated:

A bug bit the CJI football team over the bye. Several players missed practice time last week, really the only thing that's been able to slow down a Hawks attack that's outscored it's opponents 184-46 through three games this season.

"Seems like whoever gets the ball can really break it for a big play, anyone who gets the ball can do a lot of damage," Hawks Senior Justin May says.  And May is the Hawks main 'wrecking ball.' When asked how many touchdowns the senior running back and outside linebacker has scored this season, head coach Jim Vinson responded with a chuckle, "quite a few," and he's done it rushing, receiving, passing and returning.

"When i get the ball, just try to score," May says. "The offensive line is doing great, just giving me a giant hole. all I really have to do is run the ball, really. Just make a few plays and hopefully get to the end zone every time."

Vinson adds, "He's a very smart kid on the field, he's very athletic. His God given tools are extremely good, but he's very smart on the field as well."

May is one of six seniors and seven returning starters on this years roster. Vinson says that experience, and the return of tight end Troy Harmon from injury have contributed to the teams success. So has missing the playoffs a season ago.

"Really put a chip on our shoulder... really want to make this year count. Last year, we obviously didn't make the playoffs but, I think this year, we keep going strong, we should be able to get there, definitely," May says.

"We've played together on this same field since grade school. It's our dream to make it to the state championship, and hopefully, be able to do that," adds Senior Troy Harmon

The Hawks know it's early, but other than the flu, nothing has been able to stop them so far.
