Bruin golfers hoping to cash in on hometown advantage at State

Posted: Updated:

The AA high school state golf tournament kicks off tomorrow in Helena, and the host teams are feeling confident.

One of those teams is the Capital Bruins. Last season the Bruin boys team finished only two strokes shy of a third place finish, so this year their goal is a top three finish. The Lady Bruins are returning all five golfers who played at state last year, and are only juniors. So the Bruins are hoping to capitalize on having the home course advantage.

"We're definitely all underdogs," said Bruins junior number one girls golfer Shelby VanHemelryck. "I mean we're all juniors. We're not the best out there, but we all work really hard and have been improving. So this year we might come out of nowhere."

"We definitely have the players," said Bruins senior number one boys golfer Cory Preshinger. "Last year we were struggling on the way to state, so we didn't play as well. But this year we have a chance at top three. A team hasn't placed top three at Capital I believe since like 1982."
