Carroll Women's Soccer Ready for Conference, National Tournament

HELENA -

Usually teams enter their conference tournament having to win it to get an automatic bid to the national tournament. The Carroll women don't have to worry about that because they've already clinched a spot, so there really isn't any pressure.

"Actually it's made us more excited," said Saints senior forward Lexi Pyette. "We get to play with no pressure on our back, and just get to go out and play soccer for fun, and that's the best thing you can do."

"I think mentally it takes some pressure off, but this team the don't want to give up," said Saints head coach Dave Thorvilson. "I think going into a postseason tournament, it's not in the back of our minds that we're going to take it easy."

In round one, on Wednesday in Eugene Oregon, the Saints will play a very familiar opponent: UGF. The Saints and Lady Argos tied in their only regular season meeting. So even as the one seed, they know anything can happen.

"I'm excited to play, and I think everyone else is," said Saints senior midfielder Michaela Kueffler. "We didn't get the result we wanted in the regular season, so I think it's a good game to come out and show them how we can play."

"Well I'm from Great Falls, so I always like to beat Great Falls," joked Pyette. "But they're a good team. Anybody could beat anybody any day, and we need to take them serious."

To these seniors everything is serious. The tournament is a perfect tune up for nationals, and they want to make sure they're at their peak with a conference title.

"We're just, one, grateful for the opportunity to be our regular season winner and go to nationals," Said Thorvilson. "And two we can't wait to show the national scene what we have here in Montana."

"Our expectations are to get to Alabama, so to win our first game," said Kueffler. "And once we get to Alabama take it game by game, and just play our game."

So far this season playing their game has led to a 12-5-1 record, a regular season crown, and a national berth. So as they enter for the conference tourney they know it's all about playing their game, and racking up the wins.
