MHSA Discusses Potential Class C 6-Man/8-Man Realignment

Posted: Updated:

UPDATE (Wednesday, 11/25/15 at 8:15 p.m.)

The MHSA announced on Wednesday what the Class C 6-Man and 8-Man division alignments would look like if Denton/Stanford/Geyser, Box Elder, Hobson/Moore/Judith Gap, Lone Peak and Westby-Grenora moved to 8-Man for the 2016 season. They also announced that Hays/Lodgepole would move from the Eastern Division to the Northern Division for 8-Man Football.

6-Man Football Alignment:

North: Augusta, Big Sandy, Geraldine/Highwood, Heart Butte, North Star, Sunburst, Valier, White Sulphur Springs

South: Bridger, Custer/Hysham, Fromberg/Belfry, Winnett/Grass Range, Northern Cheyenne, Reed Point/Rapelje, Roy/Winifred

East: Bainville, Carter County, Froid/Medicine Lake, Garfield County, Lambert/Richey, Savage, Terry

West: Alberton, Hot Springs, Lincoln, Noxon, Sheridan, St. Regis, Valley Christian (Missoula), West Yellowstone

8-Man Football Alignment:

East:Circle, Culbertson, Fairview, Plentywood, Powder River, Scobey Opheim, Westby Grenora, Wibaux

West: Arlee, Charlo, Darby, Drummond/Granite, Plains, Seeley Swan, Superior, Twin Bridges, Victor

Some representative of the schools are not happy about going to 8-Man Football.

"There is 114 kids in our high school, only 12 went out for football, but on the daily 9 was at practice," Box Elder Senior Quarterback Brandon The Boy said on twitter. "So you're telling me we should go 8-man football? Not feeling that choice. Especially losing 7 seniors.

Head Coach of state champions DGS Scott Sparks agrees. "Let teams play up if they want & base what league you are in on participation numbers only, not enrollment," Sparks said in a tweet.

MHSA Executive Director Mark Beckman acknowledged that there is a possibility that teams can remain in 6-Man despite enrollment numbers.

"If they come into our board and say 'we have 70 in our school, however, we've only had ten students come out for football," says Beckman. "And we have our roster, we can show you we're going to have ten, ten, and ten.' Then we can consider that to say that you'd have a tough time participating in eight player because you may have a forfeit in that. So they use factors there too."

Additional, non-football related news the MHSA announced was the addition of a new mercy rule where Varsity teams can end a game after three innings if there's a 15 run difference and both teams agree to end the game.

Class B/C Boys and Girls Tennis will also see a potential realignment

The defending 6-Man State Champions and Runners-Up might not have a chance to defend their titles next year.

The Montana High School Association Board of Directors has taken a preliminary action to move 6-Man Schools Denton/Stanford/Geyser, Box Elder, Hobson/Moore/Judith Gap, Lone Peak and Westby/Grenora to 8-Man Football beginning in the 2016 season.

MHSA Executive Director Mark Beckman tells KFBB that the reason for the switch is because of enrollment numbers. The enrollment number for 6-Man football is 65. If a school has a higher enrollment number than 65, they will have to play 8-Man Football.

KFBB Spoke with Denton School's Athletic Director Adam Jerome, who said that Denton, Stanford and Geyser plan to renew their co-op for a three year period but their total enrollment would be in the high 70's, which means they would have to move to 8-Man.

The decision will not be final until the Board's annual meeting in January. Until then, school's will be given notice of the switch and will have the chance to present new information to the MHSA if they wish to remain as a 6-Man school.

Additionally, Gardiner's request to move from 8-Man to 6-Man Football was denied. Hot Springs and Northern Cheyenne's request to remain as 6-Man schools was approved.

Schools moving from 8-Man to 6-Man include Bainville, Noxon and White Sulphur Springs. Bainville was an 8-Man co-op with Culbertson for the 2015 season.

If the decision passes in January, the 6-Man Alignments would be as follows:

North: Augusta, Big Sandy, Geraldine/Highwood, Heart Butte, North Star, Sunburst, Valier, White Sulphur Springs

South: Bridger, Custer/Hysham, Fromberg, Grass Range/Winnett, Northern Cheyenne, Reed Point/Rapelje, Roy/Winifred

East: Bainville, Ekalaka, Froid/Lake, Jordan, Richey/Lambert, Savage, Terry

West: Alberton, Hot Springs, Lincoln, Noxon, St. Regis, Sheridan, Valley Christian, West Yellowstone
