Carroll Women a Perfect 8-0 to Start Season

Posted: Updated:

To find out exactly how the Carroll Saints have started this season so hot, I did some hard reporting to figure out their secret. And I got nothing.

"I can't give out the secret," joked Saints head coach Rachelle Sayers. "Then everybody will know."

"The secret, can't give it away," said Saints sophomore post Cassy Hashley.

One thing that hasn't been a secret this year has been reigning conference freshman of the year Cassy Hashley's play. Through eight contests she leads the team in points, rebounds, and free throw percentage.

"We really challenged Cassy to become a better rebounder," said Sayers. "She was a great rebounder in high school, and last year she did some amazing things for us as a freshman. And on top of that being a better perimeter shooter so that people can't just suck in the key."

"Just the emphasis on the inside-outside game is kind of our focus this year," said Hashley. "If we get three or four shots down low that's going to free up the guards, because they're going to start doubling."

Hashley headlines a group of 12 underclassmen on the Saints roster, leaving only four upperclassmen. So these young Saints have had to learn quickly how to go from following role models, to becoming them.

"There's sometimes where you have to let the freshmen know like 'hey this is a business trip and isn't all fun and games,'" said Saints senior forward Jordan Johnston. "But our team has really good balance throughout, and our lower classmen have really stepped up their play."

"We had great role models and great leaders so just feeding off them we kind of know, from last year, we know the ropes," said Hashley. "Any tips or secrets or tips or just secrets we can tell them we definitely share with them."

At least they're sharing secrets with somebody. But between their depth, size, and young leadership, I doubt many other teams will figure out the secret to the Carroll Saints anytime soon either.
