Helena's Mathews Commits to Princeton for Track

Posted: Updated:

Helena High senior Connor Mathews signed to become a part of the current Ivy League champion Princeton Tigers track team. Mathews is the Montana state champion in the 400 meter dash, and was a big part of the Bengals championship last spring. Right now he's a starting guard for the Helena Bengals basketball team and says that this decision came down to more than just athletics.

"It came down to the mechanical engineering," said Mathews. "It was just way better than all of the other mechanical engineering programs, and I figured that education comes first and I might as well go with the best education."

"It's awesome," said Bengals head basketball coach John Hollow. "I'm not a numbers guy as far as how many kids go to Ivy League schools every year, but I know it's not that many. It's a rare opportunity that we get to coach a kid like that."
