Helena is seeing a pattern in criminal mischief. Yesterday morning Helena police received reports of criminal mischief to store front and vehicle windows .
They appear to have been shot out with a BB or pellet gun sometime Sunday night.
Two of On Broadway restaurant's windows were damaged that night as well as windows of eight vehicles throughout town on Howie St., Boulder Ave., Ewing St., Deerbourne Ave. and Broadway St.
Assistant chief of police Steve Hagen says it's not an unusual type of crime to see around the holidays. This often happens right around Christmas with kids off for two weeks who may have gotten a BB or pellet gun for Christmas.
"What we are doing is putting out extra patrols looking for anything suspicious. Generally, how we solve these is with the help of the public . They will see some car slow down in a neighborhood and then all of the sudden they have a broken window. Get down as much information as you can about a vehicle," says Hagen.
Hagen says whoever is responsible for the incidents is likely in a vehicle with damages so spread out throughout the city. He says citizens reporting suspicious Activity is what helps most in these situations.
Hagen says that while an incident like this is something that is difficult to predict or prevent, if possible, cars should be parked in enclosed garages. If you must park your car on the street, park it somewhere well lit. Of course if you see any suspicious activity, contact HPD at (406) 447-8479.
