Undefeated Lady Bengals Receive Assist from Soccer Team

Posted: Updated:

The Helena Lady Bengals don't want to get too cocky, but after finishing 8-12 the past two seasons, it's nice to start off 5-0.

"We're definitely on a high right now, but we don't want to be too confident," said Lady Bengals sophomore guard Kamden Hilborn. "We just want to go in and play every game, because there's good teams, and we haven't seen most of the better teams that we'll be playing."

The Lady Bengals are keeping their focus on winning as they prepare for 2016, and for some that hasn't been a problem at all this school year. Four players on this year's squad also played in the Lady Bengal soccer state championship team that went undefeated this past fall. Or in other words, those four girls haven't lost a game all year.

"Winning was such a normal thing for us in soccer, and I feel like it just translated right to basketball," said Lady Bengals sophomore guard Katie Martin.

"We always look up at the banner because we want to try and get another one this year," said Lady Bengals senior forward Shanna Floerchinger. "We just focus on that each game at a time."

"We talked about that at the beginning of the season, what it felt like to be a state champion and what it took," said Lady Bengals head coach Eric Peterson. "They were very forthcoming to the other girls about how good that feels."

On the flip side of that, winning games, and championships feels great, but losing, well lets just say it's not fun.

"Losing? I hate losing," said Hilborn. "Honestly it's the worst feeling ever, and to not lose this whole season so far it feels great."

"I haven't lost in a long long time, and I'm not looking forward to that day, hopefully it doesn't come," said Martin. "We know what losing is, but we're not used to it."

No team ever hopes to be used to losing, and as they enter the new year, the Lady Bengals hope that their hot start in 2015 is just something they can build on in 2016.
