What if Planned Parenthood loses federal funding

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

Congress passed a bill today that repeals the Affordable Care Act, "ObamaCare." The bill also seeks to defund Planned Parenthood for one year while investing in community health centers.

Planned Parenthood of Montana serves about 12,000 patients statewide.

In Planned Parenthood’s 2014-2015 annual report, it shows about 43 percent or $553.7 million of its funding comes from the federal government, and that includes payments from Medicaid. The rest of its funding comes from private contributions or other resources.

Director of community affairs for Planned Parenthood Great Falls Jill baker said 90 percent of the organization’s services are preventative--such as birth control and cancer screening--all funded using federal dollars.

"Many of our patients are low income, Baker said. “So about 70 percent of our patients receive some type of financial assistance, which comes through the form of federal funds to help offset the cost of those services. Without those funds they would have to go without the services or have to find another healthcare provider--and there aren't enough health care providers available to serve low income patients."

Baker said doors will remain open despite the cuts, but it would prevent the organization from being able to serve as many patients as they do now.

"That would leave them having to find other places to receive services. But more often than not, they just go without care, which put people in a tough place."

The bill is headed to the president's desk where it faces a veto. But regardless, Planned Parenthood said it will continue to serve the community in the best way it can.
