Great Falls Public Schools recognized for tobacco-free policy

Posted: Updated:

The Great Falls Public Schools (GFPS) district is being recognized for its tobacco-free policy and has now joined the ranks of other schools across the treasure state.

GFPS has been enforcing Montana's tobacco-free school provision of the 2005 clean indoor act, n which the school district prohibits use of tobacco on school property or at school sponsored events. This includes use of any form of electronic cigarette as well, and thanks to the 'no tobacco enforcement,' the school district has been added to the list of Montana Tobacco-Free School Districts of Excellence.

Superintendent Tammy Lacey says this recognition is important for both students and community members.

"Of course we don't want our students having any kind of tobacco on school grounds. We want a healthy environment for them. But we also want adults to understand that they are role models for our students. And so we ask adults to not do any modeling of smoking, chewing or having electronic cigarettes around our students as well," Lacey said.

GFPS will be publicly recognized in a ceremony on Monday at the Great Falls Public School District Office off 4th St. S.  That event will start at 5:30 p.m.

We are receiving reports of a structure fire on the west side of Great Falls, off Fourmile Creek Road.  According to scanner traffic, a grass fire has reached the trailer, and it is now fully engulfed. All residents have been evacuated, but there could still be animals inside. Scanner traffic also indicates there could be a large propane tank in or around the home.  It is unclear at this time what started the blaze. Multiple agencies are currently responding.
