Frenzy Friday Feature: Matt Wyman, 1/8

Posted: Updated:

When Carroll Saints head coach Carson Cunningham recruited Matt Wyman, he knew he was getting a good player, but he never thought he'd be so good so soon.

"He's just been phenominal," said Cunningham. "He averages eight points per game. He's shooting 65% from the field, he's shooting 50% from three. It's like statistically insane!"

A big part of his success... is due to the position switch for Matt at Carroll. At Great Falls High the Bison used him primarily as their point guard, but at Carroll he's able to play off the ball more.

"Just being on the wing is nice," said Wyman. "It's different opportunities to score, and then I think just for this team it's taking opportunities when they come, not forcing too much, because we have some great scorers and great players."

What's been a true asset to Matt so far has been his length. At 6-6 he's causing problems for opponents, and is revered as the best defender on the team.

"Coach Carlito, he always tells me to use my length, use my long arms and my big hands to be disruptive," said Wyman. "So if that's my role on the team then I'm really working hard on it."

"He plays multiple positions, guards all kinds of different players, and he's done great for us whether he's guarding 4's, or 3's, or 2's, or 1's," said Cunningham.

But tomorrow may be the day Matt's been looking forward to most this season, as he gets to return home as a Saint to play at the University of Great Falls.

"It's going to be a weird homecoming, playing a road game in my home town," said Wyman. "But I'm really excited to get out there and play. It's just another conference game, and I've got to think of it like that."

As a freshman Matt has already exceeded expectations for the Carroll Saints, and it's safe to say that as he grows as a player these next four years, the Saints program will continue to grow with him.
