1st Annual Scheels Ice Fishing Derby

Posted: Updated:
GREAT FALLS -

Many Great Falls families put on their warmest gear this morning, grabbed their fishing poles, and headed to the 1st annual Scheels ice fishing derby at Wadsworth Park.

When fishermen stepped out onto the ice this morning, they hoped today, luck would be on their side.

"We’ve had better days I think, but it was still fun," fisherman Garrett Wilson said.

The last time Garrett Wilson and Alex Gould went ice fishing was when they were about six years old, and they hoped those skills would come in handy for the Scheels derby. But unfortunately, for these fisher-"men", luck wasn't in their favor.

But one little fishergirl hooked luck by the gills.

Olivia Olson caught a 14.5 inch fish, the biggest catch of the day in both the children and adult divisions.

All this fun out on the ice today went to a local cause, the "Hooked on fishing, not drugs" fishing club at North and East middle schools.

"Monthly we take kids fishing and the idea is to get them out and doing something besides the video games and the TVs,” club Co-Leader Jen Volkmar said. “Our goal is to reach kids who maybe don't have the opportunity to do fishing any other time other than with us."

The money will provide teens with fishing gear and cover other expenses for their outings.

Even if these fishermen went home today with stories bigger than the fish they did or didn't catch--you can't beat enjoying a beautiful day in Montana’s great outdoors.
