Montana African American Heritage Project

Posted: Updated:

The Montana Historical Society based in Helena presented their findings from a year-long research project.

The research, which focused specifically on African-Americans in the Treasure State, was done through a grant provided by the National Park Service. The Preservation Office has learned where folks in the under represented demographic lived, worked and which of those places are worthy of preservation and historical recognition.

"One of the important things to realize is that folks of different backgrounds and different ethnicities have been a part of Montana history since the very beginnings," said Community Preservation Officer Kate Hampton.

Hampton says this is the first time Montana has a comprehensive story of African American history in the state and the possibilities of what they can use the research for are endless.

In the future, the Montana Historical Society says they want to build online exhibits and eventually a program at the MHS museum in 2017 with their landmark, storyline and character findings.
