Fairfield's Barta Making an Impact as Freshman at Gonzaga

Posted: Updated:

It looks like some things never change. Jill Barta is still dominating on the basketball court.

Barta, who redshirted last season, is leading the Gonzaga Women's basketball team in scoring averaging 10.9 points per game through 21 contests. She;s doing so while playing only 18.9 minutes a contest. The freshman forward is also contributing on the boards with five a game, good for third on the team.

The Bulldogs are still searching for consistency. After making the NCAA Tournament seven years in a row, that streak is in jeopardy as the Zags are currently 6-3 in the West Coast Conference and 14-7 overall. Bulldogs second year head coach Lisa Fortier says that Barta's continued contributions will help her team make a push to keep the streak of tournament appearances alive.

"We are looking to keep her on the right track, getting her feet set all the time because we are looking to her. I don't care what grade she's in, we're halfway through the season, she's not really a freshman anymore anyway, and we've been really good when Jill has been good offensively this year," Fortier says.

"Last year really helped redshirting," Barta adds. I kind of knew what my roll would be this year, playing minutes and so, you can't play like a freshman for sure, I mean, everybody does but, you've got to step up and take that role."

Barta knows she has room to improve. She is shooting 39 percent from the field and says she's working on her defense. She also misses Montana where, "people always waved at you when you walked down the street." If she continues to play the way she has been, they'll start doing that in Spokane too.
