Senior Standout 2/8: Great Falls High's Keaton Burcham

Posted: Updated:

Standing at about 6 feet 7 inches tall, they call him "The Skinny Giant."

"I'm skinny and I'm big," says Senior Keaton Burcham. "So I guess it fits me perfect."

"Gigantic" also describes his play on the court. The senior has been a defensive presence in the middle for the Bison, ranking 4th in the state for blocked shots per game.

"The biggest thing though is he's early and works his tail off," says head coach Bob Howard. "He's productive. He does a lot of the little things defensively and offensively. He's a nice passer, can handle the ball somewhat. But his shot and his length are his pluses."

Keaton has had to overcome a lot of adversity to earn his spot on the Varsity roster. He was born with a birth defect in his Kidney and last year Keaton had to have surgery to repair a hole in the organ. It made it difficult for him to contribute.

"I had to do a lot of (recuperating) and stuff like that." says Keaton. "A lot of strength training and stuff. It really hindered me on everything."

Now that's he's healthy, Keaton has helped the Bison become a dangerous squad in the Eastern AA.

"He's played though a lot of stuff, where most people would just hang it up," says Coach Howard. "But he's tough enough to get through it. He's got kind of a clean bill of health right now and he's doing good."

"It gives me a lot of confidence," says Keaton. "Just knowing that I can go out and compete with all the others. It's just really fun. I love competing."

And nobody wants to compete with this giant, who can easily dwarf the competition.
