Carroll's Carr Embracing Sixth Man Roll

Posted: Updated:

Last season Oliver Carr was terrorizing opponents defenses from the opening tip. But this season, he's been the Saints sixth man, which has taken some getting used to.

"When you sit the first few minutes of the game you kind of lose some of that energy from warm ups and all that," said Carr. "Finding that energy that energy within yourself and coming off the bench making an impact is just kind of what my role is."

So far Oliver's done pretty well in his role. He's 15th in the Frontier Conference in scoring at just over 11 points per game, which is the second most points for a bench player in the Conference.

"Coming off and just being aggressive on offense, getting to the rim, getting assists to my teammates, and just making an impact on the offensive end," said Carr.

"I don't think it's really affecting him coming off the bench," said Saints junior point guard Zach Taylor. "He still looks to score all the time. We know whenever he's in the game we've got to get him the ball."

The biggest reason for Oliver's switch to the bench has been his defense. While offensively he's a nightmare to cover, opponents last season routinely went after him to score. It's something he's vowed to work on to get back into a starters role.

"It's all defense for me," said Carr. "I'm going to work on getting stronger, getting faster, and working on my lateral movement. Once I improve that I'll be an effective defensive player."

Whether Oliver Carr is starting or coming off the bench, he's proven he's ready to sacrifice for the benefit of the team, while still being able to be one of it's most productive members.
