Helena Bengal Boys and Girls Looking for First Round Byes

Posted: Updated:

This will be the first year that the top two schools in each conference in the AA will get first round byes, and Helena High is looking to take advantage.

The Bengal boys currently sit in second place in the Western AA with a 7-3 conference mark, and have a big game this Thursday against third place team Big Sky, who is 6-4 in conference. The Bengals defeated the Eagles earlier in their only other match up 50-48, and for their playoff picture it's simple: win and you're in for a first round bye.

"We've got to win one of those games, and we get a bye to state," said Bengals head coach John Hollow. "If we don't we're leaving the door open for a lot of other things to happen. So we've got to control our own destiny this week, and get back to playing the way we were playing."

"Big Sky is going to be ready to go for sure," said Bengals senior guard Connor Matthews. "it's going to be really competitive, probably the biggest game this year. So we've just got to come in with a level head, and not get too excited, and just hopefully execute our game plan."

The Lady Bengals have a pretty similar picture to the boys. At 6-4 they currently sit second in the Western AA, but behind them are Glacier, Big Sky, and Hellgate all sitting at 5-5. Due to tiebreaker scenarios the Lady Bengals need to win this Thursday at Big Sky, and then again on Saturday when they host unbeaten Sentinel in order to keep their first round bye, short of some very unlikely scenarios.

"It's like a lot of pressure on us, and for them it's not as much pressure so I feel like they won't be expecting it when we come out and play super hard," said Lady Bengals senior forward Shanna Floerchinger. "So hopefully we'll just play really well together."

"we just need to work as hard as we can and get some mojo, some good mojo, going into state," said Lady Bengals junior guard Hailey Crawford. "I mean that's the best thing we can do for us. Whether we have a playoff game or we don't we just have to play through that."
