Malmstrom Air Force Base reacts to Brussels terrorist attacks

Posted: Updated:

In light of Tuesday's terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium, ABC FOX Montana checked in with Montana's Air Force base to see how military bases on U.S. soil react following an international terrorist attack.

United States Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge, Technical Sergeant Chad Thompson, with the 341st Missile Wing Public Affairs, says that while he could not discuss the security of the base he could comment on its security posture, stating Malmstrom remained vigilant and focused on their daily mission of defending the nation and it's allies. In response to news of the Brussels attacks, TSgt. Thompson says Malmstrom touched base with all of it's personnel, performing what is called a 100% accountability recall.

"What this is, is basically we reach out to touch base with everybody on base just to make sure everybody is okay," TSgt. Thompson said to KFBB over the phone. "(We) have not found any of our Airmen here that were directly affected by these attacks."

He says it is a procedure the military follows often after major disasters, such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to make sure Airmen are okay mentally and emotionally for service.

In a written statement, TSgt. Thompson added that "Malmstrom Airmen are always ready to defend America with a safe, secure, effective nuclear deterrent and combat-ready force at the request of the President 24/7. Our Airmen are highly trained and qualified- in fact we have an all-female force on alert across Air Force Global Strike Command today providing that nuclear deterrent, which is a first in Air Force history."

As of 11 p.m. Mountain time Tuesday, the Belgian government was reporting at least 11 people were killed at the airport. A security official says at least 34 people were killed between both bombings- at the airport and near a subway train. ABC News is reporting that a member of the U.S. Air Force, as well as their family, were injured in the attack at the Brussel's airport.
