Former Bruin Smith Starting Strong for Saints

Posted: Updated:

Last season Brittany Smith was tearing it up in the circle for the Capital Bruins as one of the top pitchers in the state. But going into her first year at Carroll, Smith is no longer a pitcher, as the Saints have her playing shortstop, which is actually a position she's never played before. In high school she did have some infield experience at second base, but was slated next to an All Conference short stop in McKenzie Johnston. Currently Brittany is splitting time with Carroll's lone senior, Justine Taylor, and next year should have the spot to herself. But the Saints do like what they see from her, especially her .300 battering average in ten games.

"To come in, and step in, and play as well as she has as a freshman in a brand new position is great," said Saints head coach Aaron Jackson. "At the plate she's just a competitor. Her at bats are always quality at bats, and so it's great to see those as freshman."

"Being in the same town, and the same area, and having some of the same people that watched me in high school come watch me in college is one of the coolest things ever," said Smith. "I still think it's really great to be in the same town I was in high school."
