The National Park Service will be accepting public requests for those interested in possibly receiving a firewood collection permit for Yellowstone National Park during the 2016 year.
Beginning this year, firewood collection permits for Yellowstone National Park will be awarded by lottery. Individuals interested in participating in the lottery for a 2016 firewood permit should call (307) 344-2116 from Friday, April 8th through Tuesday, April 12th and leave their name and daytime phone number. Names left during those dates will be randomly selected and successful applicants will be contacted as wood becomes available throughout the year.
After Tuesday, April 12th, names will only be accepted Monday through Friday from 8 am till 5 pm by calling (307) 344-2107. This means that names received after April 12th will be processed in the order they are received after the initial list has been exhausted.
There is no guarantee that wood will be available or in sufficient quantity to provide for all permit requests. 14 permits out of 125 applicants were awarded in 2015.
Firewood permits cost $25 dollars and allow permit holders to take up to three cords of wood. Specific site guidelines and regulations, including hours and dates of collection, will be explained at the time a permit is issued.
