Helena Senators Ready to be Cliché in 2016

Posted: Updated:

Chemistry is a word that frankly, is overused in sports. It's cliché to say that team chemistry is important, but with nine returning seniors, the Helena Senators are ready to be cliché.

"With nine guys returning you need them to set the tone in practice, set the tone for the work ethic so that the work gets done during the week, and then we get to have some fun on the weekend," said Senators head coach Dave Thennis.

"Us seniors have been together for years, since freshman year," said Senators senior pitcher and infielder Koby Griffin. "We hang out outside of baseball, we have a really close relationship, and I think we can help build those relationships throughout the team."

With having so many returners to go along with the brand new Senators, head coach Dave Thennis knows the possibility for different line ups is endless.

"You can play the match up game, and who's hot and who's not," said Thennis. "I think it breeds some chemistry too where guys are rooting for other guys to be successful because they know they're going to get their shots too."

"I think it'll be pretty key, the depth we have," said Senators senior pitcher and outfielder Danny Burton. "We've got a lot of kids who can play numerous positions, and they're not just kind of stuck in one spot out there. And I think that will help whether we have injuries or if someone's in a slump. I definitely think it'll play a big role."

Having that kind of depth does have a flip side: it means there may be some checked egos. Which the Sens say, is not a problem.

"They may not be an everyday starter on this team," said Thennis. "They might start 75% of the games, or they might start half the games. So guys are going to have to be unselfish."

"You've got to put your faith in the team," said Griffin. "You've got to put the team before yourself, and I don't think any of us are just in it for ourselves."

Being unselfish and having good team chemistry both fall under the cliché category. But clichés exist for a reason: because they work. Which is exactly what the Senators are banking on.
