Farming Family from Geraldine Introduces an International Guest to Ice Breaker

Posted: Updated:

Finland's Samuli Juurakko, or Sam, is still getting used to just how expansive Montana's farmland can be.

"The biggest single field out there (Finland) is probably 100 acres. We have done 500 here and there are many others waiting for spraying," Juurakko says.

The 22 year old studies agriculture back home and is interning until October with Hucke Land and Livestock located three miles north of Geraldine. In the few weeks he's been here, Sam has fit right in.

"It's been pretty fun, and I think he's done a really good job," 7 year old Arrow Hucke claims.

"It's been great, the kids have had a ball with him, it's really been a lot of fun. He's already got to be the guest speaker at show and tell, so we got that one out of the way," Arrow's mom Angie Hucke says.

On Sunday, Sam will take a break from one Montana tradition: farming, to partake in another: the Ice Breaker.

"There is plenty of work to do, but we want him to have time to have fun and the Ice Breaker for our family has been one of those events that's just been a good, fun time to enjoy the day," Will Hucke says.

"I think I'm just going to have some fun. I haven't run since September, so I just want to have some fun," Sam says.

The Hucke's will do the one mile course, while Sam will run the three mile course. Rain is in the forecast, which might slow work on the farm, but Sam says will help him on the pavement.

"Raining is much better for me, it's makes you feel fresh and I like more raining," Sam says.

Sam won't admit it, but the Hucke family says he's been training a bit, and has even taken over the family's work out equipment!

"He took my weight set, mine was collecting dust so he knocked the dust off of it and been working it, so he's been doing good," Will says with a laugh.

After first talking with Sam, the Hucke family knew right away the Ice Breaker was something he'd really enjoy. It's become a welcome day away from Spring work for the family, and now, for their new friend.
