The University of Great Falls Rodeo program will host the 2016 NIRA Big Sky Regional Finals on May 6-7 in the Pacific Steel and Recycling Four Seasons Arena. It will be the UGF program’s only home event of the season.
College rodeo teams from all over the state of Montana and Wyoming will converge for a chance to move on to the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. The top two teams in the final Big Sky Region men’s and women’s standings and the top three individual competitors in each event’s final season standings will qualify for the National Rodeo.
While the UGF men’s team is most likely out of the running for nationals, sitting seventh out of ten teams in the regional standings, the Lady Argos could make it with a dramatic push in the region’s final rodeo. The team is currently in third with 1,052.83 team points, behind Montana State University, which has a death grip on first with 4,208.5 points, and the University of Montana Western with 1,772 points.
One UGF cowboy and one UGF cowgirl currently rank in the top three in an individual event. Sophomore Bareback Rider Cache Hill currently ranks third in the event. He is 33 points shy of the second place rider but holds a strong lead of almost 200 points over the fourth place contestant.
The margin of error is much thinner for Lady Argo Abby Knight in the Barrel Racing standings. The sophomore currently sits in third and would need a tremendous day to move up in the rankings but could easily fall out of national qualification with a slim five point lead of the next highest contestant.
The performance portions of the event will begin at 7 p.m. on both Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 with the slack portion beginning at 8 a.m. on Friday. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $10 for children ages 10-17, $7.50 with a UGF ID, and FREE for children under 10. Admission to the slack is free.
The College National Finals Rodeo will be held from June 13-18.
