Special Olympics Montana 2016 Summer Games

The 2016 Special Olympics Montana State Summer Games will take place Tuesday, May 17th through Friday, May 20th in Missoula. 

Competitions include the areas of track & field athletics, equestrian, bocce, gymnastics, cycling, golf, power-lifting, soccer, aquatics, triathlon, kayaking, and motor activities training program. Most events will be held at The University of Montana. Of the 11 Olympic-type sports, all but triathlon, gymnastics, equestrian, and kayaking will be on the campus. Other venues include Frenchtown Pond (kayaking), Mismo Gymnastics (gymnastics), Missoula YMCA (triathlon), and Big Sky Horse Park (equestrian). Details are as follows:

  • Opening Ceremony:
    • Wednesday, May 18th @ 7 p.m.
    • Washington Grizzly Stadium
  • Closing Ceremony:
    • Friday, May 20th from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
    • Dornblaser Field

Both events are free and open to the public. The Summer games will also coincide with the culmination of The Law Enforcement Torch Run

SOMT is a state-wide non-profit organization that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The 2016 games will feature more than 1,100 athletes and 500 coaches from roughly 70 teams. Approximately half of Special Olympics Montana competitors are youth, the other half adults. The youngest athletes are 8 years old; the oldest athletes will be in their 70’s and 80’s.

The Missoula community enjoys a significant positive economic impact on hotels restaurants, retailers, museums, recreation and more. Thousands of people visit the city including teams, volunteers, family members, spectators, and friends. The Destination Missoula Convention and Visitor Bureau has calculated a total economic impact of nearly $1 million annually in Missoula, which supports more than 300 jobs and generates nearly 1,700 hotel room nights

The 2018 State Summer Games will be held in the Electric City.

    A woman walking near Hauser Dam has been rescued after weather and slippery conditions caused her to get lost.  According to the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office, the woman is safe and uninjured. Her identity has not yet been released.     The body of a missing Chinook man has been found. According to Blaine County Sheriff Glen Huestis, the body of Noah Hofeldt was found Sunday evening around 5:30pm by volunteers floating the Milk River searching for Hofeldt.  Sheriff Huestis says they believe Hofeldt went missing as early as Monday, June 11th.  It is still unclear what led to the death, but foul play is not suspected. Hofeldt's body is being sent to Billings Tuesday morning for an autopsy. Until then, Sheri...
