Argos Softball Season Ends with Second Loss to Morningside
(UGF Athletics) - Two UGF errors led to five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, costing the Lady Argos the lead and ultimately the game in an 8-5 loss to Morningside College (Iowa) in the championship round of the Morningside Bracket. The loss ends UGF’s season and sends the Mustangs to the 2016 NAIA Softball World Series. Had UGF won the game, they still would have had to beat MC one more time in order to become Opening Round Champions.
The error riddled fourth negated a huge moment in the third inning for UGF. Already down, 3-0 after the first two innings, the Lady Argos loaded the bases with one out and the team’s best hitter for average, junior Hali Gruntowicz, coming to the plate. Gruntowicz didn’t just hit for average, she hit with power, connecting for a grand slam to give UGF a 4-3 lead. It was the junior’s first home run of the season.
After falling behind 8-4 after the fourth inning, the Lady Argos managed to regain one run during the ensuing inning, with an RBI double from junior Alissa Keeler. She drove in senior Alex Lowry, but that would mark the end UGF scoring for the game and the season.
UGF finished the year with a record of 27-20 (12-12). During the 2016 season the team made the NAIA Opening Rounds for the first time in program history, won its first NAIA Opening Round game in program history, and recorded its first and second win over a Top-5 opponent in program history.
