Lady Bison Softball Knows Improved Defense is Key to Title Hopes

Posted: Updated:

The Great Falls High softball team's quest for a state title begins on Thursday in Kalispell. The Lady Bison certainly have the bats to get the job done, it's in the field that has given them problems throughout the season.

Mike Coleman's team is at, or near the top of several offensive categories. The Bison rank 1st in the Eastern AA in home runs and second in batting average and runs batted in. Great Falls High has also been strong on the mound, posting the second best ERA in the East. However, the Bison have had issues in the field committing 61 errors. It's something Coleman says his team needs to shore up if they hope to win it all.

"Defense. Our defense, we have struggled all year. We'll play really well, and then before you know it, we'll boot a couple of balls and then they'll have all the momentum scoring runs on us and we have to keep the momentum down. Teams at state, you give them a little momentum and they'll take off on you and that's what we've got to stop," Coleman says.

Great Falls High, the East's 2nd seed, opens play on Thursday against the West's 4th seed Helena Capital at 4pm.
