Governor's Cup to Kick Off with Kids Marathon Run

Posted: Updated:

On Friday, the Kids marathon opens up the activities for the 2016 Governor's Cup weekend in Helena after drawing approximately 600 students last year. Assistant race director Jesse Zentz says he expects a thousand participants this year.

"They get a little foot token they can put on their back pack," said assistant race director Jesse Zentz.

The tokens attract more kids to come and participate. Overall, the kids marathon includes ten elementary schools in or around Helena, but there's still room or growth.

Our goal is to have all the schools in the Helena school district involved and all the elementary schools in the surrounding area involved as well.

Unlike the adults, the kids just want to have fun when they get to Centennial Park. It's not about winning, or is it?

I think of it like a race, and I got first, second and third, a couple of times. The energy of the kids brings out volunteers. Each school has at least four parents help out, and Meg White is volunteering for the second-straight year. She says the kids marathon provides opportunities she didn't have as child.

"I think it's really important for kids to enjoy how to be active and healthy and exciting. With kid, there is never a dull moment."

"I bring a squirt bottle on Wednesdays and Friday to help the kids get cooled off a little bit and they'll stop and say squirt me squirt me."

The kids marathon and fun run is Friday, June 10, 2016 at the Centennial park in Helena. The run starts at 6:30 p.m. The Governer's Cup will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016.  The marathon and half marathon starts at 6:00 a.m. in the morning. The 10K starts at 7:00 a.m. and the 5K starts at 9:00 a.m. There will also be an awards ceremony at 10:00 a.m. as well.
