Winners didn’t just grace the award's podium at the 2016 Governor’s Cup.
Kennedy Engstend, an 11-year old, deserves cheers for competing in the 10K.
“I didn’t even care where I placed,” Engstend said. “I was just really happy that I finished.”
And Larry Bickell, who completed in the 10K at 75 years young.
“Stay in shape and have a goal when exercising in your life,” Bickell said when asked if he had advice for staying healthy.
Also, for married half marathons runners Brody Vetter and his wife. The husband came back to help the wife cross the finish line.
“We were playing on running together and I left her,” Vetter said. “When I finished I went back for her.”
The most touching story came from Wanita Zimmerman, who ran with her 15-month old son, in memory of her late son who died in 2013.
“I really don’t have any thoughts,” Zimmerman said. “That’s why I got into running after we lost him, because I’m feel free.”
On the competitive side, Heather Lieberg fell 23 seconds short of breaking the 5K record, but she says she will try again next year.
“I’m really competitive,” Lieberg said. “It’s already in the back of my head.”
Dan Jackson, from Bozeman, completed the double dip, winning the 10K and the 5K.
“It felt so good to be done,” Jackson said, “for one, because I won both the races, which was my main goal. And two because I knew I didn’t have to run again today.”
Triumph, life-long memories and dancing are a peculiar combination, but they defined the 2016 Governor’s Cup.
