Bison Alumni Refurbish Logo on Swarthout Fieldhouse

Posted: Updated:

School just got out for summer, but two Great Falls High alumni are busy helping to beautify it well in advance of the students return next school year.

Rick Gartzka, Class of 1962, and Craig Gresham, Class of 1981, are refurbishing the Bison logo on the south side of Swarthout Fieldhouse. It was gifted to the school by the class of 1996, and as far as Gartzka knows, hasn't been touched up since. He and his wife both work at several Great Falls High sporting events throughout the year, while Gresham's daughter currently goes to school there. The two just met on Monday, months after Gartzka first approached the school about giving the logo a facelift.

"This last winter one day during basketball I came out and looked at it and said, 'It's got to be fixed, so I'm going to paint it.' So I ran it by all the principals and all the associates and they all agreed with me. Said, we're going to get it done, I'll paint it. And that's how it all got started," Gartzka says.

He adds all the materials were provided through donations. Sherwin Williams donated the polyurethane based paint which he says will weather well and ABC Seamless provided the lift.
