"He said, 'You know, I don't know if I want to do baseball again,'" Helena Brewers Assistant General Manager Travis Hawks said describing an encounter with the 2016 Helena Brewers play-by-play broadcaster Craig Durham. "I looked at him and I said, 'One day, I'm going to hire you. And you're going to work for me. And we're going to be together again.'"
Helena Brewers Assistant General Manager Travis Hawks and Craig Durham worked one season together with the Mobile BayBears, the Double-A affiliate for the Arizona Diamondbacks, but Hawks sensed Durham was special.
"When there was an opening this winter, he gave me a call," Durham said. "He said, 'I think you'd really like out here.'"
"It was an instant fit," Hawks said. "I didn't even think twice."
The decision to move to the Capitol City was easy. Durham can't think of another way to spend a summer.
"Going into the club house, talking to the players and talking to the coaches and watching these players progress," said Durham.
Before moving to Helena, Durham called games for minor league hockey and baseball. One time, he even made it to the Show.
"In Australia, they opened the season there in 2014," Durham remembered. "I got to call the Diamondbacks and Dodgers."
So how did Durham land back in rookie ball?
"For me, it's not about the level of play," Durham said. "If you're a professional baseball player, it's great."
Durham took time away from baseball, but his passion brought him back.
"A chance to be close to them as they are working their way up," Durham said. "That's what makes this so exciting."
Like the players he'll spend some much time with this summer, he aspires to make it back to the Big Leagues."
