Abandoned Mine Lands Program honored

Posted: Updated:

Congratulations are in order for the abandoned mine lands program...at least that is what the federal Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement is saying. The Independent Record reports that the program received an award for its work to restore water to Sand Coulee. Back in the 1890s, Sand Coulee water was contaminated by coal mining that surrounded the city. The DEQ drilled new wells and a water tank and replaced nearly two miles of water lines with funding from federal and state grants.
