As the 2016 season is set to begin in a couple of weeks, the Helena High Lady Bengals are the team to beat.
The Lady Bengals claimed the state title in 2015, but this season must replace 4-year goalkeeper Shanna Floerchinger. However, Coach Mike Meloy’s biggest concern revolves around finding a holding midfielder, the key position in his 4-5-1 attack.
“We don’t have anyone identified how can occupy that position,” Meloy said. “We do have two of three candidates though.”
Coach won’t have to worry about scoring. Last season’s leading scorer Kamden Hilborn returns. The junior feels that despite winning it all, many in the highest classification have doubts about the champs.
“People are questioning us,” Hilborn said. “I do feel that will push us to be better this year.”
Senior Kassi Schmitz already has three division championships to go along with a state ring, and she thinks this year’s team has already gelled.
“We’ve played longer together,” Schmitz said. “We were able to get right back into that flow that we had that end of last season.”
“I think we’ll be better than we were last year,” said Meloy.
That’s a tough task. The 2015 team went undefeated, along with winning the state crown.
